At Tesco Mobile, everyone’s welcome. We’re committed to creating an inclusive environment where people feel supported, empowered, and able to contribute their best. If you’re passionate about APIs, modern engineering, and building secure, scalable digital ecosystems, this could be the role for you.

As an API Gateway Developer, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining API solutions on the Apigee Edge platform. You’ll work within the Tesco Mobile Engineering team—a diverse and cross‑functional group responsible for both building and operating critical digital services.

You’ll collaborate with engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to create APIs that are secure, scalable, reliable, and aligned with industry best practice. Working as part of the API Chapter, you’ll initially join the central APIG squad, which is responsible for development, security, and operations of the API platform. As you grow, you’ll have the opportunity to rotate into other squads to deliver strategic outcomes.

Your work will help ensure seamless integration across systems and services, enabling high‑quality experiences for our customers.

You will be responsible for:

API Design, Development & Security

Design, develop, and implement secure RESTful APIs on the Apigee Edge platform.
Write reusable, testable, and efficient code following shared engineering standards.
Configure and customise policies, proxies, and components to meet project needs.
Implement robust security controls, authentication, and authorisation mechanisms.

Integration & Connectivity

Partner with internal and external teams to integrate APIs across applications and services.
Troubleshoot and resolve integration issues to ensure smooth system communication.
Implement monitoring, logging, and performance tracking for API health and optimisation.
Conduct regular performance assessments and apply enhancements across the API ecosystem.

Documentation

Produce clear API documentation, including specs, usage guidelines, and troubleshooting steps.
Maintain up‑to‑date documentation to support collaboration across engineering and business teams.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

Work closely with architects, developers, QA, and business stakeholders throughout the SDLC.
Communicate effectively to understand business needs and translate them into technical solutions.

You will need:

Skills & Experience

Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
Proven experience designing and developing APIs on Apigee Edge.
Strong understanding of RESTful architecture, API design principles, and web services.
Proficiency in JavaScript, Python, or Java.
Experience implementing API security, authentication, and authorisation.
Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
Excellent troubleshooting, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
Expertise in designing DynamoDB tables for scale and performance.
Experience designing, implementing, and optimising SOAP services.
Strong understanding of HTTP optimisation, caching strategies, and advanced HTTP features.

Preferred Skills

Apigee Edge certification.
Experience working with CI/CD pipelines.
Knowledge of containerisation and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
Experience with MuleSoft.

If you’re excited about working in a modern engineering culture, building high‑impact APIs, and contributing to a platform used across a large and growing customer base, we’d love to hear from you.
