This morning, we ran an article on how Sainsbury’s is opening its new West Croydon store on the same site as one of Britain’s earliest supermarkets to function as we’d recognise today. Opened back in 1950 at a time when UK shoppers were used to standing by a counter whilst the shop assistant collected and packaged their goods for them, this was one of the first new supermarkets to feature the self-service format.
