The largest toy store in the US, Toys ‘R’ Us, filed for bankruptcy protection in the US and Canada yesterday, becoming yet another large retailer to be affected by the rise of online stores and budget retailers. The announcement casts doubts over the future of the company’s 1,600 stores and upwards of 60,000 employees. Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, commented that “while today’s decision does not necessarily mean it is game over for Toys ‘R’ Us, it brings to a close a turbulent chapter in the iconic company’s history.”
