As a response to the Brexit vote in June, shoppers from abroad have headed to Britain to exploit the subsequent drop in the value. This triggered a rise in the spending on foreign credit cards, with shoppers spending more than £725m on the high streets during December. The majority of these shoppers came from either Hong Kong, the USA, UAE or China. Processing firm Worldpay suggested that this influx helped the retailers greatly as many saw a decline in footfall as British shoppers did much of their shopping online. Marketing director of Worldpay, James Frost said that “the influx of free-spending tourists we saw in December will have been a welcome boost for retailers looking to balance the books”.
