According to figures from the British Retail Consortium and Springboard in their monthly footfall monitor, total retail footfall dropped by 1.1% year-on-year in July. The month saw high street footfall decline by 2.1% whilst shopping centres experienced a 1.3% fall, as the resurgence seen recently began to falter. Diane Wehrle, Springboard marketing and insights director, said “Over the last few months the growing importance of the leisure based trip has become a key part of the narrative when talking about retail destinations, but a -0.5% drop in footfall post 5pm in July is the first evidence of a tightening of purse strings on casual dining and leisure trips.”
