Tesco has come under fire from consumers for inventing farms where it supposedly sources some products.
Outrage has spread over social media after the supermarket created fictional, British-sounding farms on its packaging for certain own-brand products, some of which is imported.
The so-called ‘fake farm’ brands, launched on Monday, include Woodside, Willow and Boswell farms on labelling for pork, chicken and beef, as well as Nightingale and Redmere on salad and vegetable items, Rosedene on berries, apples and pears and Suntrail Farms on a range of imported fruit.
The National Farmers' Union (NFU) says the labels may give customers a false idea of where the produce is sourced.
NFU chief food chain adviser Ruth Mason said: "The NFU is seeking assurance that Tesco's new branding on selected food products is accurately and clearly labelled as British.
"We recognise that Tesco has chosen to brand these products with fictional farm names - a marketing technique practised in Aldi and Lidl on selected product lines.”
