Tesco have announced a growth in sales for the 11th consecutive quarter.  Like for like sales in the UK were up 2.5% in the second quarter, meaning the total half year profits have risen by 2% to £564 million.

The acquisition of Booker at the end of last year has also helped sales grow, with their sales growing by 15.1%.

The World Cup helped boost clothing sales as the themed menswear proved to be popular among customers. 

The results have come just weeks after the launch of Jacks, which was opened to compete with the likes of Aldi and Lidl.  Jacks are set to open up to 15 stores before the end of the year.

Dave Lewis, Tesco chief executive, said “We have made a good start to the year. At the same time, we have made further strategic progress.

"We are firmly on track to deliver our medium-term ambitions and are continuing to improve the quality and value of our offer for customers in all our markets."
