Supermarket chain Tesco is giving its customers a choice between three local community projects to see which one gets the majority share of the money that has been raised from the sale of plastic bags.

Grants of £8,000, £10,000 and £12,000 are being given to charities via the new ‘Bags of Help’ scheme to be spent on environmental improvement projects. To decide who gets the majority, shoppers will get a token at the check-out and will then vote instore to see who gets the £12,000.

Also benefiting from the scheme will be initiatives including sports facilities, woodland walks, new pocket parks and community gardens. Since October 2015, a total of £11.5million has been raised.
Tesco UK and ROI chief executive, Matt Davies, said: “We want to serve Britain’s shoppers a little better every day, and everything we do at Tesco is informed by what our customers tell us.

“That’s why we wanted to give our customers the chance to choose the environmental projects they most want to benefit from the money raised through the bag charge.

“Our customers will help us make sure the money raised through the charge goes to make the biggest difference to local communities up and down the country.”
