The chief executive of Tesco, Dave Lewis, was paid £4.6 million last year, including a £3 million bonus for taking the retailer back to profit. In the year to February 27th, the retailer posted pre-tax profit of £162 million, a significant improvement on a loss of £6.4 billion the previous year. This was the biggest loss ever recorded on the UK high street and the trigger for an overhaul of the company’s structure and strategy.

Mr Lewis was parachuted in after his predecessor Philip Clarke was sacked and was given a £3.2 million ‘golden hello’ to compensate for bonuses and benefits forfeited when leaving his former employer Unilever.
