Tesco has confirmed that Gerry Murphy will join its board and be appointed as its new chair on 1 September.

Currently chair of Tate & Lyle and luxury brand Burberry, he will step down from his Tate & Lyle role on the same to date to ensure he has sufficient capacity to take on the new position.

Murphy is a former chief executive of B&Q’s parent company Kingfisher. Prior to that, he headed up Carlton Communications, Exel and Greencore Group.

He has also previously served as a non-executive director at British American Tobacco, Merlin Entertainments, Novar, Abbey National  and Reckitt Benckiser.

Murphy will replace John Allan who stepped down earlier this year following allegations of misconduct.
