Tesco have made arrangements to trial a scheme in which their waste sugar will be collected and given to help feed the struggling bee population in the country. The sugar will come mainly from bags that have split and therefore been declared not fit for consumption, with the trial operating in Tesco stores in Cornwall and Devon. The population of bees has been on the decline in the UK since 2007, with a reduction of a third due to disease, pests and lack of wild flowers. A sugar-water solution will be created using the waste, which can then be fed to the bees in the place of nectar from flowers.
