Following the fall in the value of the pound brought about by Brexit, inflation on food items in supermarkets has risen significantly. Grocery inflation jumped to 1.4%, marking a near three-year high in the three months to February 26th. Increases were seen on items such as fruit and vegetables, as they are mostly imported, and tea and butter prices. The head of retail and consumer insight at consumer consultancy Kantar Worldpanel, Fraser McKevitt, suggested that some of the bigger supermarket chains are benefitting from the rise in prices.
