Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is hopeful that the coming weekend will bring about a boost in alcohol sales, in accordance with trends set about in previous years. In 2016, the last weekend of January made up 14% of the total alcohol sales for the month, selling almost double the amount as was sold on the first weekend. Wine is set to be the preferred choice for shoppers, with white, new world wine amongst the best sellers for the store. Approximately 2 million people participated in Dry January last year, with continuing numbers falling off as alcohol sales steadily increased during the month, culminating in the large sales during the final weekend, which Sainsbury’s expects to see a repeat of this year.
