Supermarket group Sainsbury’s is introducing an apprenticeship scheme for software developers, as part of a move to encourage people with an enthusiasm for coding into the industry.

Starting this summer, 10 successful applicants will take part in a bespoke two-year programme which will see them sitting at the heart of Sainsbury’s expanding Digital Lab in Central London. Each of the apprentices will work on a wide range of digital projects to make the lives of Sainsbury’s 25 million customers and 161,000 colleagues easier.

Applicants need no prior experience of coding as all apprentices will take part in a six-week bootcamp to learn the basics of coding and developing. At the end of the two year programme they will have gained a Level 4 qualification in Software Development, and have the skills and experience necessary to be a software developer.

Jon Rudoe, digital and technology director at Sainsbury’s, said: “Over the past year we have grown our digital and technology team to over 900 people.  We now want to discover the next generation of coders and give them great opportunities and training in our fast-paced business. By creating these apprenticeships, we’re enabling people to turn their passion for technology into a potential career with us.

“Technology plays a key role in delivering Sainsbury’s strategy; so these apprentices will get the chance to work on projects across our business, from online groceries, to our clothing website, banking and much more. They will also be working alongside some of the most talented people in the industry.”

The closing date for applications to the Software Development Apprenticeships is 7th July.
