River island profits have dropped 40% as they invested in their online strategy to cope with the shift in shopping habits.

Ben Lewis, the chief executive, said that online sales are growing, but stores still remain a ‘very important part’ of the customer experience.

Lewis, whose uncle is the nephew of Bernard Lewis, who founded the retailer 70 years ago, said that despite difficult times on the high street, the company held its market share due to online growth.
