Administrators have said that the remaining 57 BHS stores are likely to remain open until August 28th, an extension of eight days on the original deadline.

The decision, by Duff & Phelps and FRP Advisory, has given the remaining stores time to sell whatever stock is left after closing 106 branches in recent weeks, including the flagship Oxford Street store. There is also a possibility that the closures could be pushed back even further, meaning the remaining staff will have a little more pay before redundancy.

David Gill, of shop workers' union Usdaw, said: "The remaining BHS staff are going through the difficult and heart-breaking task of dismantling stores that many of them have been in for most of their working lives.

"Wherever the blame lies for the demise of this once-great British retailer, it certainly is not with the staff who are paying a high price for corporate decisions that have led us to where we are today.”
