According to research commissioned by The Daily Telegraph, the number of shoppers on British high-streets has fallen by almost a quarter in the last decade. The study revealed that footfall had dropped by 22.2% since the start of the financial crisis in 2007, with the rise of online shopping and collapse of several large high street brands being key factors in the decline. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has suggested that potentially, up to 80,000 more stores could close as retailers as the current climate of economic uncertainty continues, with hikes in business rates and the continued impacts of Brexit.
