Marks & Spencer has announced that its managing director for clothing and homewares, Jill McDonald, is set to leave the business.

McDonald has been working in the role for nearly two years.

M&S chief executive, Steve Rowe, will be taking control of the business for the time being.

In its full year results in May, M&S said that its clothing and home sales had fallen by 3.6%, with like-for-like sales declining by 1.6%.  The company put this drop down to weak availability in some fast-selling lines.

Rowe said that McDonald had already established a strong platform for the transformation of the clothing and home business.  This included improving the quality and style of products with the aim to attract a younger family customer.
