It has been revealed that Marks and Spencer has teamed up with Oxfam to launch an online platform where shoppers can buy items of clothing that once belonged to celebrities such as Lisa Snowdon, Stella Tennant and Millie Mackintosh.

Customers will also be able to donate their clothing to raise money for charity in the established Shwop Shop scheme.

Funds raised will go to Oxfam’s initiative to fight poverty and since it started in 2012 M&S has received 25 million pre-worn items amounting to around £17 million from its customers.

Director of Plan A at M&S, Mike Barry, said: “Shwopping has been a huge success and the 25 million items ‘shwopped’ so far, has help us to raise over £17 million for Oxfam.”

“We know our customers’ wardrobes are full of hidden treasures, as we see ‘shwoppers’ turn up week in week out to drop off their once-loved clothes into our Shwop Drops and we are honoured to have their ongoing support.”

In other news, it has also been revealed that the retailer is expecting to cut 525 jobs as the company works to slash costs and improve its “complex” business operations. Approximately 400 staff based at Marble Arch will be relocated, with IT and logistic jobs moved to operations in Hemel Hempstead.

Steve Rowe, M&S chief executive, commented: “never easy to propose changes” that impact employees. But he added “I believe that the proposals outlined today are absolutely necessary and will help us build a different type of M&S – one that can take bolder, pacier decisions, be more profitable and ultimately better serve our customers.”
