Marks and Spencer has seen a drop in sales over the Christmas period.

Like-for–like sales dropped by 2.2% in the three months leading to the end of December.

UK clothing sales dropped 4.8%, totalling 2.4% like-for-like.  UK food sales dropped 1.2%, or 2.1% like-for-like.

Chief executive Steve Rowe remained positive, by saying: “Against the backdrop of well publicised difficult market conditions our performance remained steady across the period. Our food business traded successfully over Christmas as customers responded to improved value. Our transformation programme remains on track.”

M&S has also said that it continues to improve its online proposition, having already managed to mitigate lower footfall to its stores.
