Lidl, Britain’s fastest growing grocer, has publicised its commitment to the National Farmers’ Union Fruit and Vegetable Pledge.
The pledge will ensure that security for suppliers, price certainty, fair terms and elimination of waste is at the top of the retailer’s agenda.
Lidl has worked closely with a number of its farmers for more than 15 years, and insists on supporting the nationwide initiatives to back British farmers and to work in a sustainable way with all of its suppliers.
With a flat reporting structure in its buying team, the grocer notes the importance of reporting to a profitable British fresh produce sector.
Lidl will also continue its on-going promotional activity with farmers including its ‘Pick of the Week’ promotions.
Ali Capper NFU horticulture and potatoes Board Chair said: “We are delighted that Lidl has publicly committed to our pledge, highlighting its commitment to long-term supply relationships, equitable distribution of reward along the supply chain, and fair and respectful trading relationships”
Lidl commercial director Ryan McDonnell added: “Lidl, with its already long history of working closely with its suppliers, is an ideal candidate to make the pledge.
“We are very proud to have developed and maintained strong, long-standing relationships with all our suppliers, and our commitment to the NFU pledge cements this further. We’re also very keen to ensure that our sourcing process supports the growth and development of UK growers, which is vital in encouraging more and more people, particularly our shoppers, to regularly eat more fruit and veg”
