Amidst economic uncertainty and the continued impacts of deflation, discount supermarket chains Lidl and Aldi have announced plans to enter the US market. Aldi plan to spend upwards of £2.5bn over the next five years, with the intention of opening roughly 900 supermarkets, whilst rival chain Lidl is preparing to open its first US stores this week. It has been suggested that the expansion of these two chains could put pressure on existing US supermarkets such as Wal-Mart and Kroger.
