Laura Ashley is set to close 40 of its UK stores.

The company’s new chairman, Andrew Khoo told the Press Association that he wanted fewer stores, but wanted the remaining stores to be bigger.  He also said that the company will be expanding its presence in China.

He said: “The direction I want to go in is to have not so many stores, but maybe the ones we have could be larger. It’s more about showcasing the brand.”

The company will look to build an online presence in China first, and then move onto open stores in the country.
