Nick Canning has quit his role as joint managing director at Iceland after nearly 15 years in the role. Iceland’s chief executive Malcolm Walker revealed that Mr Canning had resigned last weekend in search of a “fresh challenge”.
Mr Canning joined Iceland in 2003 as people and customers executive director, and has held the position of joint managing director since 2014.
Although a replacement has not yet been announced, Mr Canning will leave as the retailer’s successful revamp boosted its profits by 6.3% in the year to March.
Its impressive performance comes after increasing pressure from rival discounters as well as significant upheaval driven by larger grocery rivals Tesco and Sainsbury’s.
Chief executive Malcolm Walker said: "“We both felt that it was the right time for him to move on and seek a fresh challenge, while he is still young and energetic enough to do so.
“I believe that he now intends to take a long break while he decides what to do next.
“Nick remains a good friend and he leaves with our very best wishes for success in whatever direction his future career may take him.”
