The recent announcement of the business rates as set by the government has seen considerable backlash from the community, with more than 500,000 businesses set to pay more. These are primarily individual entities such as cafes, hotels, nurseries, schools and shops who could all end up paying more than 300% higher from April. Some business groups including the British Retail Consortium suggested that any move from the government to hinder the appeals process could actually be illegal, due to local government finance laws. Under the proposed laws only companies who say that their rates are wildly inaccurate, with the government suggesting must be outwith a margin of error of 15%, may have their appeals processed.
