DIY retailer Screwfix have started construction work this month on the new unit which covers 562,000 sq ft and will primarily create 200 jobs which will increase to 700 over the next five years.
The new distribution centre joins Trentham and Prologis Park Stafford which services stock for its 490 strong store network. Screwfix are presently opening one new store a week and the centre will support its growth plan.
IT , supply chain and logistics director, Martin Lee, commented: “The decision to construct a warehouse near Lichfield was taken to ensure we have the logistics infrastructure to support the needs of our expanding business. Adding one store per week to our network means we need to make sure we have the stock distribution in place to enable our busy trade customers to get what they want, when they need it from the nearest Screwfix, so they can get back to the job as quickly as possible.”
Screwfix said the facility is aiming to be as sustainable as possible with the use of technology such as solar PV panels, LED lighting and rainwater harvesting.
The recruitment for the new jobs will start in September next year and will be operated by Wincanton on behalf of Screwfix.
