According to grocer the Co-operative, another heatwave could provide a £290 million lift to food retailers.
Research shows that when temperatures hit over 21 degrees, food sales rose 10%, with an average spend per week of £2.9 billion at UK food retailers, which could mean a £290 million boost in a week as Brits stock up on barbecues, burgers and cold beers.
Steve Murrells, chief executive at Co-op, commented: “It is a challenge for food retailers to ensure that we are ahead of the weather and have the right products in stock at the right time: shoppers quite rightly expect that their local convenience store will have the food they want: whatever the weather.”
The weather forecast for next week is predicted to be sunny and warm.
