Fairtrade goods such as bananas and coffee have seen an increase in sales, with total revenue rising by 2.6%. The rise in sales will contribute approximately £30m in premiums, which can then go on to be used for social projects in countries such as Malawi and the Dominican Republic. Fairtrade bananas saw the largest increase in sales, rising 6% which in part is due to supermarkets such as Sainsburys and Waitrose only stocking the Fairtrade version of the fruit. Sales had been on a two-year decline however; the latest results show a resurgence in the company’s fortunes.
