It has been reported that department store Debenhams is in talks with the former chief executive of Kingfisher, Sir Ian Cheshire to become its next chairman.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, however if all goes well Sir Ian Cheshire will take over from the current chairman Nigel Northridge who has held the positon since April 2010. An announcement could be made as soon as January 14th regarding his departure.

Also leaving the department store this year is Michael Sharp, chief executive, which could mean that Sir Ian will become an executive, rather than non-executive chairman.

The department store is due to release a trading update on January 12th to see how it fared in the festive season, however there is a concern, like many other retailers that warm weather, fear of Paris-style attacks and discounts from Black Friday may have stopped shoppers from going to city centres.
