Coins and notes are no longer the UK’s number on payment method for the first time, being replaced by contactless payments. Figures from the British Retail Consortium show that contactless cards now account for about a third of all card purchases, up from 10% as recently at October 2015. In addition, it was also the first time that debit cards exceeded cash in percentage of transactions, slightly ahead of cash’s 42.3%, with a total of 42.6% of all transactions.
