Supermarket giant Tesco is conducting an industry first ‘cost of production’ trial and are inviting British sheep farmers who supply its lamb to take part.
If successful, the supermarket will be the first in the UK to implement such a model as it believes it will help instability in the UK lamb market.

The trial will happen over a 12-month period where data will be collected which will help Tesco evaluate the cost of production in a variety of production systems. Farmers will be selected by independent sheep consultants based on geographic location, farm size, seasonality and production type.

Matt Simister, commercial director for fresh food, said: "Tesco has a long history of supporting UK agriculture and we recognise the quality, expertise and commitment of British lamb farmers to provide the best possible produce for customers. We work hard to have an open and transparent dialogue with all of our farmers and producers of British lamb, as well as the wider farming community, so that together we can deliver a truly sustainable farming industry."
