It has been reported that department store John Lewis saw record sales on Black Friday, which increased 11.9% from the previous year resulting in the group’s biggest ever day of trading.

On the main day itself, sales mainly came from johnlewis.com whilst shops were more busy at the weekend which resulted in a sales rise of 9.3% from the same weekend the year before.

Sales peaked between on 9-10am on Black Friday when the website was taking 4.9 orders per second. The most successful department was electricals which saw wearable tech sales increasing 932%, with other successes coming from products such as GHD, Dyson products, gaming and ‘connected home’ products and fashions best sellers include Ted Baker and Barbour.

Retail director at John Lewis, Mark Lewis, said: “Black Friday itself marked a record day for John Lewis and strong trade continued into the weekend. On Friday online trade really stepped forward, while shops saw their biggest increases over the weekend, showing that more than ever customers like to mix and match channels to shop in the most convenient way for them.

“The key story of the weekend was the success of our distribution operations, which have proved that we can manage the highest peaks of demand at Christmas, so that customers can be confident when they shop with John Lewis for their gifts.”
