Since going into administration two weeks ago, 88 year old department store BHS has had multiple offers to purchase some or all of the business.
Potential buyers for all of the business include Edinburgh Woolen Mill, Sports Direct and Preston-based millionaire property owner Yousuf Bhailok as well as potential buyers for parts of the group, including discount chain B&M and Ikea.
The general interest has raised hopes that around 11,000 jobs and 164 stores can be saved. As part of a staff campaign, London landmarks were lit up with Union Jacks along with slogan #SaveBHS.
Commercial manager at the Croydon outlet, Stephen Hill, said: “Most people have been here 15 to 20 years and everyone is proud that they are part of the great British high street. We’re all getting on with our jobs as you would expect. It is hard seeing everything that has been written about us but we’re determined to show the best of what we do.”
Chief executive of BHS, Darren Topp, commented: “The #SaveBHS campaign was the idea of staff. They are really keen that we sell the business whole and keep everybody’s jobs.” Adding “In a dark time for everybody this is a statement on behalf of the employees. We have our fingers crossed that a buyer will turn up.”
