Amazon Prime members can now choose to have their packages delivered to the inside of their cars in an attempt to reduce theft of packages outside front doors.

The online retail giant has launched the service across 37 cities in the US in partnership with General Motors and Volvo and will look to expand the service more widely if it proves successful.

Using the Amazon Key App, couriers will be allowed to remotely access (very trusting) customers’ cars and leave their package in the boot.

Prime customers with a Volvo or General Motors vehicle less than three years old with Onstar and Volvo on Call accounts can add their details to the app, which will allow it to be located by the courier.

The cars must be parked in areas eligible for delivery, including public car parks and streets. Customers can track their package from start to finish, find out when and how long their car was unlocked for, and block access to their vehicles at any point.

“Since launching Amazon Key last November, we’ve safely delivered everything from cameras to collectable coins inside the home,” Amazon’s vice president of delivery technology Peter Larsen said.

“Customers have also told us they love features like keyless guest access and being able to monitor their front door from anywhere with the Amazon Key App. In-car delivery gives customers that same peace of mind and allows them to take the Amazon experience with them.”
