Low cost supermarket Aldi is to increase staff pay to a minimum rate of £8.40 per hour from February 1st. The company is the latest supermarket to announce a rise in wages, with Morrisons recently announcing that it will increase wages to a minimum of £8.20 and Lidl also said that it would be upping its minimum wage to £8.20 an hour across England, Scotland and Wales and £9.35 in London.
Aldi has said that it will be able to introduce the increase in wages without hiking prices.
Matthew Barnes, Aldi UK and Ireland CEO, said: “The success of Aldi in the UK and Ireland has been driven by the commitment, hard work and ambition of our employees and we will continue to maintain our leading position on pay.”
The “national living wage” announced by George Osborne in his summer budget will see all workers aged 25 and over paid £7.20 an hour from next April, rising to £9 from 2020.
