It has been reported that supermarket chain Aldi is planning on opening 80 new stores in 2016 which is in line with its £600million investment plan.
With a rise of 23% on last year, when Aldi opened around 65 stores, this year will bring the supermarket’s total UK store count to over 700, including expanding into Scotland where it will open eight new stores taking the total to 72.
Managing director of Aldi in Scotland, Richard Holloway has said that he is looking to 'grow relationships with existing suppliers and cultivate new ones’ and is also expecting a 10% growth regarding the amount of products sourced nationally.
As well as new stores opening, Aldi are making the move to go online this year and in 2020, IGD have estimated that the online side will make up 8.6% of the grocery market in the UK, up £8.3billion to £17.2billion.
