The Aldi supermarket chain has opened a new £50 million distribution centre at Kent’s Isle of Sheppey. The new distribution centre span 60,000 square metres and employs more than 400 staff. This is Aldi’s tenth UK distribution centre and will serve nearly 60 stores across the south east.

Aldi is working to open 130 new stores in 2019 and 2020 as it looks to launch 1,200 shops across the UK by the end of 2025.

Ben Shotter, managing director for the Isle of Sheppey regional distribution centre, said: “The new Sheppey distribution centre significantly increases our capacity and allows us to open more stores across the South East to cater for the growing number of shoppers switching to Aldi.

“Although some of our newest and most popular stores are situated in the south east, there are still many towns and cities where we have a limited presence or none at all. This is something that we are looking to address in the coming years.”
