Adidas has announced that it is to terminate its sponsorship of the athletics world governing body, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), four years early.

The decision is thought to be a direct result of the doping and corruption allegations and may result in the IAAF losing tens of millions of dollars in income.

Earlier this month, British runner Jo Pavey said that athletes have “lost faith” in the governing body, after a report commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency in November made allegations of “state sponsored doping” within Russia. A second report this month said that "corruption was embedded" in the IAAF.

Olympic gold medalist Darren Campbell commented: "It's one thing to say we won't be renewing our contract after 2019 but to actually terminate your contract now, seven, eight months before the start of the Olympic Games, this is huge.”
