What Does a Retail Assistant Do?

Many employers expect you to move between these jobs during a shift. One advert put it simply: working in store is a team effort, so be ready to step into different areas.
Do You Need Experience?
Usually not. Four of the employers in our sample say outright that experience isn't needed, or that it's a bonus rather than a requirement. What they want is the right attitude.
Training is part of the deal. 14 of the 19 employers mention training in their adverts, and one describes a two- to three-day induction for every new starter. Some employers ask you to complete an online assessment as part of your application.
Skills Employers Ask For
How many of the 19 retail employers mention each quality in their adverts:
Hours and Shifts
- Part-time is normal. Contracts in the adverts we checked ran from 8 to 30 hours a week, and full-time roles are advertised too.
- Shifts cover the whole day. Stores advertise early starts from 5am, late finishes up to 10pm, and some run 24 hours a day.
- Expect weekends. 8 of the 19 employers mention weekend or evening work.
- Nights can pay more. Night and late shifts can carry a premium. In the adverts we checked it was between £2.35 and £3.00 an hour extra.
What Does a Retail Assistant Earn?
£12.71–£14.47an hour
That's the spread of typical top hourly rates across the 10 retail employers whose adverts show pay. The middle of that spread is £12.90.
- £12.71 is the floor for most. It is the National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over (from April 2026), and it's the most common rate in these adverts.
- Ranges often start lower for under-21s. Where an advert gives a range, the lower figure is usually the rate for younger workers.
- Staying on can pay. One employer links pay rises to how long you've been there, and others increase holiday or pension contributions with length of service.
Look beyond the hourly rate as well. Of the 19 employers, 14 mention a staff discount, 13 mention holiday, 13 mention wellbeing support and 11 mention a pension.
Where It Can Lead
17 of the 19 employers talk about progression in their adverts. The routes they name are:
- Team Leader or Supervisor: running a shift or an area of the store.
- Deputy or Assistant Store Manager: helping run the whole store.
- Store Manager: responsible for the store, its team and its results.
Some employers also offer specialist routes from the shop floor, such as beauty, pharmacy or opticians.
