Where you could work

  • Science Museum, London: traces its origins to the Great Exhibition of 1851, and is home to the Apollo 10 capsule and Alan Turing's Pilot ACE computer.
  • National Railway Museum, York: over 200 years of railway history, including the record-breaking Mallard and the world's finest collection of royal carriages.
  • Science and Industry Museum, Manchester: on the site of the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station.
  • National Science and Media Museum, Bradford: photography, film, television, videogames and sound across eight floors, with three cinemas including Europe's first IMAX screen.
  • Locomotion, Shildon: the National Railway Museum's sister museum in the "Cradle of the Railways", run in partnership with Durham County Council.
  • Science and Innovation Park, Wiltshire: a site of around 545 acres near Swindon.

The roles

SMG hires across a wide range of jobs, from front-of-house roles such as Visitor Experience Assistant and Retail Assistant to specialist and office-based teams. Front-of-house roles are on site. Roles that can be done from home are hybrid, with the pattern discussed at interview. Hours and shifts vary by role and are set out in each advert.

How to apply

  • Application form, not a CV. SMG shortlists on values, experience and skills, with up to three supporting statement questions.
  • Hear back within a couple of weeks of the closing date if shortlisted, usually by email.
  • Interviews last up to an hour, with competency questions ("Tell me about a time when..."). Some roles use a short task or a half-day assessment day.
  • Aged 16 or over on your start date (18 for some roles, such as serving alcohol).
  • Visa sponsorship: SMG is licensed to sponsor workers, depending on the role.

Open for all

SMG is a Disability Confident Employer. It offers reasonable adjustments throughout the application and interview process, such as interview questions in advance, extra time for a task or a sign language interpreter, and supports eligible Access to Work applications.

Prefer to give your time? SMG also offers volunteering opportunities across its museums.
