About the role

Tesco Technology is seeking a highly skilled Senior Akamai Engineer to join our Network Engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, securing, and optimising Tesco's global edge delivery and application security platforms using Akamai technologies to ensure secure, resilient, and high-performing digital experiences for millions of Tesco customers and colleagues worldwide. The role demands deep expertise in Akamai CDN, Edge Security, Traffic Management, and automation of edge services.

Akamai Platform Management

  • Design, configure, and support Akamai CDN solutions for enterprise-scale web and mobile applications.
  • Manage Akamai Property Manager configurations, caching policies, content acceleration, and origin optimisation.
  • Optimise content delivery performance, availability, and customer experience across global regions.

Security & Edge Protection

  • Configure and maintain Akamai WAF, Web Application Protector, Bot Manager, API Security, and DDoS protection services.
  • Investigate security threats, analyse attack trends, and develop mitigation controls.
  • Implement rate limiting, bot protection, geofencing, and edge security policies.
  • Collaborate with Cyber Security teams to strengthen Tesco's external security posture.

Automation & Infrastructure as Code

  • Develop Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions and automate Akamai property deployments and configuration management.
  • Drive standardisation, governance, and self-service capabilities for engineering teams.

Operations & Reliability

  • Monitor platform health, availability, performance, and security metrics.
  • Troubleshoot CDN, DNS, SSL/TLS, caching, routing, and application delivery issues.
  • Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure platform reliability and compliance with operational standards and SLAs.

Technical Leadership

  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Akamai technologies.
  • Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance on edge computing and content delivery best practices.
  • Collaborate across infrastructure, cloud, security, and software engineering teams to deliver scalable solutions.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions, innovation initiatives, and platform modernisation programs.

You will need
  • 6+ years of experience in Network, CDN, Security, or Platform Engineering.
  • Strong hands-on experience with:
    • Akamai CDN
    • Property Manager
    • Edge DNS
    • Global Traffic Management (GTM)
    • Web Application Firewall (WAF)
    • Bot Manager
    • DDoS Protection
  • Strong understanding of:
    • HTTP/HTTPS
    • DNS
    • TLS/SSL
    • Caching Technologies
    • Web Performance Optimisation
    • Load Balancing
  • Experience with Terraform, Git, CI/CD pipelines, and automation frameworks.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Akamai Certified Professional or equivalent certification.
  • Experience supporting large-scale e-commerce or retail platforms.
