SENIOR DEVOPS SYSTEMS ENGINEER

About the role

In the Data and Analytics team, we focus on solving complex business problems developing products that can be deployed at scale to our customers. Our work spans across multiple platforms that support business areas including Stores, Online, Fulfilment, Marketing and Clubcard.

Our core work involves designing and building the data platforms that will support the development of data products that can be deployed at scale both internally and externally.

As a Systems Engineer for Data Platforms you are an integral part of Tesco Technology's Data and Analytics team. You have accountability for the engineering excellence of the data platform,realising this from the current state and evolving engineering practices to meet the changing demand.

You use your technical breadth and depth to build and operate mission-critical systems at scale inspiring engineering community you interact with.
Successfully transforming the way we build and operate platforms, allowing SW engineering platform consumers to focus on value-added work will be a key activity.

You will be responsible for Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the Tesco business, the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities and measures:

• Establishing and sharing engineering excellence for data platforms
• Building the data platforms to transform them without impact to existing levels of service
• Designing solutions that will operate at scale with high availability and automation at its core.
• Ability to produce High-Level Documentation for designed solutions
• Building globally, ensuring consistency in approach throughout all our locations in the UK, Europe and Asia
• Monitoring technology industry trends
• Contributing to supplier roadmaps
• Ensuring operational stability is balanced with engineering and roadmap delivery
• Driving adoption of new tools and techniques being able to understand their value and impact
• Keeping technical skills up to date and keeping track of new technologies, industry trends, understanding how they might benefit the Technology team and wider Tesco

You will need Experience relevant for this job:

• Track record of managing mission-critical, large scale service in a global organisation.
• Expertise with design, deploy and support large scale Kubernetes clusters.
• Strong experience level with Docker, Rancher, Terraform, Ansible and Jenkins.
• Strong technical knowledge and troubleshooting skills with Linux (CentOS/RHEL/Ubuntu).
• Good skills and understanding of networking technologies (TCP/IP, routing, DNS, LBs, etc).
• Experience on creating CI/CD pipelines for delivery and IaC (infrastructure as code).
• Ability to do and understand scripting/coding, with Bash, Python, Go, etc.
• Ability to understand, design, deploy and support large scale, complex platforms.
• Track record of using automation to build platforms and prevent problem recurrence.
• Ops experience in automated delivery such as continuous integration, continuous deployment and immutable infrastructure.
• Contributing to the Opensource community.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other members of a globally distributed team.
• Good understanding of Azure cloud technologies.

Required Skills:

• Solid experience with administration and troubleshooting of Linux servers (rhel/ubuntu)
• Experience creating container-based solutions on an enterprise container platform (e.g. Rancher, OpenShift, Docker EE, Azure AKS)
• Proficiency with Kubernetes
• Docker image builds
• Repository management (Docker & Helm based)
• Logging, monitoring and alerting
• Kubernetes cluster networking implementation
• Kubernetes cluster storage implementation
• Kubernetes security
• Kubernetes Ingress and load balancing
• Scripting/coding skills – Bash, Python, Golang or similar
• Desired State Configuration Tools – one of Chef, Puppet, Ansible, Terraform or similar
• A very good understanding and experience with Networking – TCP/IP, routing, DNS, DHCP, Load balancers

Desired Skills:

• Systems architecture, security and Disaster Recovery
• Good understanding of the CNCF landscape
• Creating CI/CD Pipelines for delivery
