Tip of the week

How do I get into graphic designer/artworker roles?

"To get into a graphic design role you would need to have an HND, foundation degree or honours degree in graphic design or another art and design-related discipline. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop) is a must.

Fashion in general is a very competitive industry so for an entry level role within the fashion sector you would need to have work experience such as an internship with an in-house design team or creative agency (ideally working with retail clients.) Internships are usually unpaid but it’s a great way to develop your portfolio and make relevant and essential industry contacts.

At this level you must be able to demonstrate that you can take concept direction from senior designers, as you will not have much creative reign, often working to templates to ensure brand consistency. You should aim to come away from this experience with a working knowledge of print production, artworking, typographic, retouching and layout skills.
